Amnesty International kinuwestyon pamumuno ni BBM matapos pagdudahan kanilang ulat ukol sa Martial Law

Image
"Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has no regard whatsoever for the victims of martial law... Anyone running for President who says they do not know how public information on human rights violations during martial law were generated is blatantly denying history. This makes us question the kind of leadership they offer to bring to Malacañang," ani Olano sa isang statement nitong Enero 25, 2022.

Senatorial aspirants Diokno, Colmenares, Gutoc bat for public officials’ SALN release

Image
By Kaela Gabriel PHOTO: Esquire Philippines Three senatorial aspirants have agreed to publicizing the Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Networth (SALN) of public officials to combat corruption and promote transparent governance. In the third episode of the senatorial forum series conducted by the CNN Philippines this January 30, the attendees of the discussion, Neri Colmenares, Jose Manuel “Chel” Diokno, and Samira Gutoc, all “human rights defender”, emphasized the importance of transparency through SALNs in aiming for a ‘clean’ government. According to Colmenares, SALN is an ‘anti-corruption mechanism’ and mandated by the law when it comes to public officials.  “The SALN is an anti-corruption mechanism and it’s really distressing that the president doesn’t even set a good example, a good model to all the public officials. I mean an ordinary municipal clerk, an ordinary government employee submits their SALN but the president of the Republic doesn’t want to make it public,” Co...

Sotto delivers in OT as Adelaide survives Melbourne, snaps 3-game slide

Image
By Justine Juyad PHOTO: Adelaide Kai Sotto and the Adelaide 36ers averted a late meltdown to stun Melbourne United in overtime, 88-83, for their first win after three straight losses in the 2021-22 National Basketball League-Australia season at Adelaide Entertainment Centre, Sunday. The Pinoy young prodigy nailed a clutch two-point jumper with less than 34 seconds left in OT to seal an upset victory against the top-seeded team who came from a hot eight-game winning streak. The South Australia-based team learned from their previous game where they blew a 12-point lead and crumbled in the second half against Tasmania JackJumpers, 71-76, last Friday night. The 7-foot-2 teenager recorded his third-straight game with double digits after finishing with 12 points and four rebounds while Dusty Hannahs who also took over in crunch time collected 19 points, three rebounds, and an assist both off the bench. Cameron Bairstow and Daniel Johnson both had a double-double — 16 points, 12 rebounds, 4 a...

Barty makes way to history, outlasts Collins, 2-1 in Australian Open Finals 2022

Image
By Norielle Pastor PHOTO: Getty Images It was a day to remember for Australia as Ashleigh Barty ended a 44-year drought. The No.1 ranked Barty captured the biggest victory of her career as she outdueled tough American Danielle Collins, 6-3, 7-6 to be the first Aussie since Chris O'Neil to win the Australian Open in front of a jam-packed Rod Laver arena, yesterday.  The 25-year old Barty came to the tournament and dominated her way to the finals– never losing a set in the elimination rounds, before maintaining her punishing serves that sealed her the title.  In the first set, Barty easily closed it, 6-3, with her sharp serves– not giving Collins a chance to return and find her groove.  But the first-timer finalist Collins did not go down without a fight as she started to become more aggressive in the first frame of the second set, blanking Barty at 3-0.  With the momentum on Collins's side, Barty failed to stop the bleeding and found herself down 5-1 in the game due t...

Bren Victress sweeps Omega Empress in All-PH QF

Image
By Alvin Huete PHOTO: One eSports Bren Victress sent their Pinay counterpart Smart Omega Empress out of title contention after defeating them with a 2-0 victory at the quarterfinals of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Women's Invitational 2022, January 29. Coming from a great performance in the Group Stage with two wins and one loss, the Filipina MLBB powerhouse carried their domination through the quarterfinals and tallied a 30-4 kill count difference in two games combined. Victress started the game aggressively against Omega contesting the turtle and later drew the first kill with Alexandria Dhzoie "Lexaaa" Dardo's Yin-yang Overturn of Kagura to slay OMGE Fibii. At the sixth minute mark, Smart Omega Keishi snatched the first turtle and a shutdown to Ashlee's Ling, but Bren Victress resurged immediately with the Ruby and Kagura combo to force a 2-1 trade. Then Bren Victress completely dominated the game in terms of economy and objectives, while the set from Babylyn “Def...

Former UFC stars Rousey, Lesnar dominate shock-filled 2022 WWE Royal Rumble

Image
By Rob Dongiapon PHOTO: New York Post In a night where the unpredictability of both Men’s and Women’s Royal Rumble reigned throughout, Ronda Rousey and Brock Lesnar — two stars whose odds of winning before the event were relatively scarce — prevailed at the end of both Rumble matches to earn their respective championship match of choice at WrestleMania.  Rousey, a former UFC champion, came out as a surprise entrant at number 28, showcasing her marquee strikes and submission holds before eliminating Charlotte Flair to only become the fifth female winner ever of the match.  Flair and Rousey — two-thirds of 2019’s WrestleMania main event — never got their ground running in the finish as Rousey — looking as sluggish as somebody that hasn’t wrestled for more than two years — tossed over Flair following a lengthy staredown to secure the win. Alongside Rousey and Flair, number 30 entrant Shayna, who had been a teammate of the Rumble victor in UFC, and last year’s winner Bianca...

Pacquiao batak sa buhay? ‘Daig’ daw lahat ng presidentiables sa life experiences

Image

COLUMN | Journalists should be biased, but only to the truth.

Image
By Ancelmo Miguel Catalla Cartoon by Joseph Idusora After declining to participate in GMA News’ Presidential Interviews, the camp of the presidential aspirant Ferdinand Marcos Jr. defended their absence by accusing the multi-award-winning journalist Jessica Soho of being biased and “anti-Marcos.” However, it is pretty ironic to call an internationally-acclaimed journalist like Soho biased when all her work is simply for the pursuit of truth.  In the Presidential Interviews, Jessica Soho showed no sign of predisposition. She questioned Manila Mayor Isko Moreno’s loyalty and populist character. She also asked Senator Manny Pacquiao about his vote-buying allegations and the P2.2 billion tax evasion case. Soho also challenged Sen. Ping Lacson after saying that his stance on the death penalty changed because of a Netflix movie. On top of that, the veteran journalist also sought Vice President Leni Robredo’s message to the people who discredited her “lugaw” movement. It’s clear that Soho...

PH birth rate shows downward trend amid pandemic

Image
By Addison Pascua PHOTO: Lillian Suwanrumpha / AFP / Manila Bulletin In contrast to earlier predictions, the COVID-19 pandemic may have forced many Filipinos to delay their pregnancies as the Philippines continues to record fewer childbirths during the onset of the health crisis in 2020. Based on the Jan. 26 report of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), the number of recorded live births in 2020 has plateaued to 1.53 million, 8.7 percent lower compared to the 1.67 million registered in 2019. “On the average, 4,177 babies were born daily, which translates to 174 babies born per hour or approximately three (3) babies born per minute,” the report read. According to PSA, the latest figures were the largest decline ever recorded since the downward trend first noted in 2012. In 2019, it was observed that the number of registered births was increasing but drastically declined when the pandemic happened in 2020. “A decrease of -14.6 percent in the registered live births was noted in the...

BBM 'di raw papalag sa ‘hateful campaigning’?

Image
"What presidential aspirant Bongbong Marcos is offering to the Filipino people is his unifying brand of leadership. He does not and will not engage in negative and hateful campaigning," ani Rodriguez sa naging interview noong Miyerkules.

Malditas rap hapless Indonesia, secure AFC QF ticket

Image
By Marjoe Toquillo PHOTO: AFC No payback, no mercy– just pure 'Maldita' authority. Malditas rode on a sizzling performance after trouncing Indonesia with a 6-nil domination to march to the quarterfinals of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup on Thursday at the Shri Chhatrapati Sports Complex. Malditas exhibited greatness after showing a well-balanced offense and defense that left Indonesia helpless throughout the 90-minute match. The Malditas victory was their second in the Group B eliminations, as a win versus Chinese-Taipei on Sunday will send the Philippine belles to their first-ever appearance in the 2023 Women's World Cup. Katrina Guillou showed how formidable their team could be after clinching a clean goal in as early as the first five minutes of the game. Sarina Bolden made up for her miss on a penalty kick at the fourth minute as she added the second goal for the Philippines at the 28-minute mark. The second half opened the floodgates for the Philippine booters as Tahnai Ann...

BBM: Pagsasara ng Bataan Nuclear Power Plant pinulitika

Image
Sa pahayag nito, nasabing naipasara ang BNPP "not because of any scientific reason”. "We really have to look at nuclear power. Wag natin i-politika [Let's not politicize it]. Once again, follow the science," pahayag ni Marcos.

‘MAY NANGINGIALAM?’ Comelec’s Guanzon votes to DQ Marcos Jr., suspects ‘powerful’ politician delaying verdict

Image
By Lance Arevada PHOTO: KJ Rosales/The Philippine Star In a rare move, outgoing Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner Rowena Guanzon has revealed that she voted to disqualify presidential bet Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in the 2022 polls, pointing out that a crime of moral turpitude was committed in the aspirant’s failure to file income tax returns (ITRs). As her retirement nears on February 2, Guanzon suddenly came forward as she suspects that the delay is now becoming “unreasonable” due to her DQ vote, with a powerful politician now interfering to influence the...
