GGWP: A Gamer Girl’s Wounds and Prejudice

Image
Lyndon James Diesta This article contains mention of sexual harassment, as well as recalls of incidents of gender-based abuse. Please be warned. Within several online games containing the concept of meta – or most effective tactics available, at its helm of strategy – it isn’t strange to see quite a mixed bag of heroes or characters; with all of them having different genders, shapes, and sizes. All of this is seen as normal by the playerbase of these games, but why can’t the same be said for the treatment of female players? As the world attempts towards more progressive views on equality, misogyny within the gaming industry remains rampant – as rude words, profanity, and even harassment and outing of public information topple the throne of a high rank. Like swords falling down from the sky, women have become unwilling victims of sexism’s wrath. But, this doesn’t mean that the Marias of competitive gaming are backing down. From the women playing in sports to the ins and outs of the ladi...

Unity Through Timeless Music: Bob Marley in PH Cinemas this 2024

Image
Precious Mary Kyla Edquilane Feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme; get on up, it’s Bob Marley time! ONE LOVE’s movie poster is now revealed! The cinematic journey into the life and music of the globe’s iconic reggae legend is set to hit the big screens this year in Philippine cinemas! This biographical drama film illuminates the life of Bob Marley, a late Jamaican singer-songwriter who is widely recognized as a Reggae pioneer. Bob’s influential work was driven by his passion-turned-mission to depict a world united in love, peace, and freedom—a stark contrast to the expropriated life he had. Yet, behind his beaming musical reputation, Bob’s introduction of Jamaican music to the world made a greater impact in expanding his people’s spirituality as a fervid proponent of the Rastafari religion. What a perfect time to have it here—as this film testifies to the power of resilience that resonates deeply with Filipinos who often have gone through adversities in the face of injustice and fear. ONE L...

The Morena Revolution— With A Heart

Image
Bea Santina and Jai De Los Santos It takes more than courage, beauty, and confidence to pass through the hunger games tunnels of Philippine pageantry before the gleaming gowns and crystal crowns. With four crowns to boast, the country continues its pursuit of this global pedestal much like an annual Presidential election with similar grit and hunger. Presented like Panem, women from all the provinces of regions north to south attempt for the Philippine sash in inches of heels. Ultimately, the Universe’s crown tilts to those beyond just beauty. Like a newborn, it takes a whole village to raise a queen and an entire nation to assure the claim to its throne. Who volunteers as tribute? The craze for the Miss Universe (MU) competition leaves the Philippine streets almost desolate as every citizen remains in their homes, holding their breath, awaiting the Philippines to be called. For twelve years since 2010, from Bicol’s Venus Raj to Cebu’s Beatrice Gomez, the country has been brought withi...

EXPLAINER | Ang KA-SAYSAY-AN ng Buwan ng Kababaihan sa Pilipinas

Image

Image
Girald Gaston When in need, call Yuki Togashi. Togashi steered the Chiba Jets against the mighty Seoul SK Knights, 72-69, to complete a perfect run en route to East Asia Super League (EASL) Championship, Sunday night at jam-packed Hoops Dome, Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu. Photo Courtesy of Tiebreaker Times The Japanese star delivered yet another masterful performance, scoring 22 points, dishing out seven assists, and making pivotal plays down the stretch to lead his BLeague squad to an unblemished 8-0 slate, marking their dominance in East Asia. With his heroics for the past two games, the 5-foot-6 crowd favorite was crowned as the Final Four MVP, putting a show in front of Filipino fans in Cebu. “This is my first time coming to this country. It’s amazing, the Philippine (Filipino) fans are amazing tonight,” the 30-year-old guard said.

Image

Papa Dudut on AI: It can mimic voices but not memories

Image
Paul Bryan Bio Radio personality and DJ of Barangay LS 97.1 Jairuz "Papa Dudut" Ricafrente discussed the state of radio amid A.I. applications on Friday, March 8 during the 11th edition of the PUP Radio Conference. He gave emphasis during the initial part of his talk on how Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) has taken over and influenced the lives of Filipino people during the pandemic. "Many of us relied on social media and became plantitas during the pandemic," Papa Dudut jested to the crowd. He also urged the students not to see A.I. as a threat but rather, a development in the media industry and that radio only embraces the development of applications. "Maraming sumusulpot na A.I. applications pero walang content kung hindi mag-i-input ang tao," he stated. Papa Dudut also debunked such claims that A.I. applications are already defeating traditional radio. He clarified that it cannot happen due to the reason that traditional radio is free while some A.I. ap...

EXPLAINER | Usapang Campus Journalism Press Attacks

Image

Juan Carlo Mercado Spoiled by a sword. Photo Courtesy of SunStar The Seoul SK Knights exited the Hoops Dome with a ticket to the finals round, vanquishing the Anyang Jung Kwan Jang Red Boosters as they spoil Rhenz Abando's homecoming game in a one-sided showdown, 94-79 in the semi-finals of the East Asia Super League (EASL), March 8. Three-time Korean Basketball League Foreign MVP Jameel Warney showed his might as he sizzled with 38 markers, 16 boards, and six dimes to send the defending champions home. Nearing the three-minute mark of the clash, the Red Boosters forced a 5-0 run to keep their team afloat, 75-83. The Knights then quickly sought revenge with a 4-0 run of their own, courtesy of a Warney floater and Yaung Woo Sub's quick layup to beat the shot clock, 87-75. COLUMN | Breaking chains, forging futures

Image
Jun Marwin Hangad and Rhianna Jaquilmac Women today are fashioned by resilience yet chained by tradition. They were expected to prepare food, maintain the upkeep of the house, and bear offspring to their male counterpart. This exposes the remnants of toxic norms, perpetuating gender inequality and oppressive systems. Cartoon by Maurice Gimena In many parts of the world, conservative views of women persist and continue to chain women to certain archetypes. In the Philippines, it is common for a single woman or a dalaga to be confronted on what are their plans for marriage. If said woman is married they would be asked when will they give their parents a grandchild. If said woman is career-driven they will be labeled as aggressive, selfish, or neglectful of their family duties. Despite these stereotypes and prejudice, women today are continuously proving that they are more than just wives despite society's limiting definition. Likes of Risa Hontiversos and Leni Robredo have taken on l...

Pacio reclaims strawweight belt via disqualification against Brooks

Image
Norielle Pastor It was a bittersweet ending for "The Passion". Photo Courtesy of ONE Championship Former ONE Strawweight Champion Joshua Pacio redeemed the throne after suffering an injury against erstwhile champion Jared Brooks to win by disqualification in the first round in ONE 166 at the Lusail Sports Arena in Qatar, March 1. The defending champion Brooks instantly controlled Pacio's back in the opening seconds of the first round, but aggressively threw down the Filipino champ straight into his neck which caused referee Herb Dean to call a disqualification against him. Pacio went immediately unconscious after the slam and received unnecessary blows right after. The Baguio-based warrior recaptured his strawweight belt and is now a six-time world champion. Brooks, meanwhile, will lose for the first time in his championship run and end his seven winning streak. On the other hand, Pinoy fighter Jeremy Miado also stepped into the cage as one of the undercards but fell into...
