Photo Courtesy of Nick Potts / AP. Proving steadier down the stretch, the Ukrainian pride bolted out in the latter stages of the battle to turn down Tyson Fury via split decision and capture the undisputed heavyweight championship on Sunday at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.  Usyk (22-0-0) consolidated Fury's WBC and lineal heavyweight championships with his own WBA, WBO, and IBF titles as the first person since Lennox Lewis in 1999 to achieve such a feat when there were only three recognized titles in rotation "Thank you so much. It's a big opportunity for me, for my family, for my country. It's a great time, it's a great day," Usyk said while fighting back tears in a post-fight interview in the ring. The 6-foot-3 Usyk channeled his inner "David" in the ninth round, as h...

EXPLAINER | Controversy sprays over ‘unauthorized’ Banksy Universe Manila Exhibit

Image
Tiffany Geluz and Paul Bryan Bio  A Manila exhibit featuring the works of anonymous English graffiti artist Banksy reignited debates about artistic freedom and the commodification of street art.  Banksy, known for his provocative stencils tackling social and political issues , has always challenged the status quo. His strategies in conveying his ‘guerilla-style’ works have themes of satire, subversion, dark humor, sardonic wit and irony.  He gained the spotlight in the 1990s due to his art that thrives in public spaces – a deliberate snub to traditional museums and their perceived commercialization. Even if graffiti is typically illegal as it involves painting on a property without authorization and is categorized under vandalism, Filipinos resonate with Banksy’s advocacy, which leads to efforts to make it accessible. However, the “Banksys’ Universe Manila” exhibit’s approach has sparked discussions and controversies due to the manner it is being displayed. A partners...

JEEPNEY TALES: Huling Pasada, Bagong Pasakit

Image

Resupply mission to Scarborough Shoal success, draws China’s ire

Image
Shekinah Jedidiah M. Alima  A civilian-led mission on Thursday aimed at resupplying Filipino fishermen near Scarborough Shoal, known in the Philippines as Panatag Shoal, has sparked tensions with China for taking advantage of its “goodwill.”  Photos Courtesy of AFP/Atin Ito Coalition. The “Atin Ito” (This is Ours) mission sought to express solidarity with the Philippines’ reclamation of the disputed territory at the West Philippine Sea. It comprised a convoy of outrigger boats carrying fishermen, activists, civil society members, church leaders, media personnel and volunteers. Following its accomplishment, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin cautioned the Philippines that any actions disrupting their claims of sovereignty in the South China Sea would be met with “countermeasures.” “If the Philippines abuses China’s goodwill and infringes upon China’s territorial sovereignty and jurisdiction, we will defend our rights and take countermeasures in accorda...

Quimbo blasts PhilHealth’s poor services amid profit hike

Image
Shekinah Jedidiah M. Alima  Marikina 2nd District Rep. Stella Quimbo wants the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) to match the quality of its services with the skyrocketing profit it acquires annually, as she said during a hearing before the House of Representatives Committee on Health last Wednesday regarding the proposed amendments to the Universal Health Care (UHC) Act. Quimbo pointed out that PhilHealth’s annual gross margin was P173.4 billion last year, excluding other investment revenues outside the government's national budget allocation, which made her concerned about the deprived services beneficiaries receive. “But ironically, the benefit spending is too (high). The benefits that we, as members, receive are too low. How do we know that? Out-of-pocket spending is too (high),” she said. The lawmaker observed that the P80 billion allocation for premium subsidies and P20 billion of benefit expansion allocations do not match the expected quality of benefit...

Photo Courtesy of Adam Glanzman / Getty Images. Tatum flashed his all-around brilliance, drilling in an almost triple-double performance after finishing with 25 markers on top of 10 boards and nine dimes in a 43-minute of action. The Duke University product expressed that Boston had prepared for a scuffle despite Cleveland's injury-hit line-up.  "Anybody who's played in this league understands what happens when somebody's best players are out, the rest of the guys have more  freedom. They play with a different level of confidence and they play different," said Tatum. Lead scorer Donovan Mitchell, ...

Marcos calls for private sectors’ help to boost HEIs’ world rankings

Image
Shekinah Jedidiah M. Alima  After Philippine higher education institutions (HEIs) failed to enter the top 100 world university rankings, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. encouraged private schools to get involved with the development of the country’s tertiary institutions during the National Higher Education Day Summit at PICC Complex, Pasay last Wednesday. Photos Courtesy of Yummie Dingding/Patrick Roque/Business Mirror/Flickr/Mapua University. PBBM stressed that the country is being left behind by other Asian HEIs when it comes to the quality of higher education, making him advocate for private and public sector’s collaboration.   "When it comes to educating our youth, government and private schools are not competitors but must be regarded as equal partners," he stated.   The 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings revealed that the highest placement of the Philippines was Ateneo de Manila University’s bracket of 401-500 that dipped from last year’s 84...

Saturday classes possible next school year – DepEd

Image
Shekinah Jedidiah M. Alima The Department of Education (DepEd) is exploring the possibility of holding Saturday classes for the upcoming school year 2024-2025 due to the planned return to the traditional June-March school calendar.  Photos Courtesy of Jire Carreon/Rappler/Jonathan Cellona/ABS-CBN News. This shift will result in a shortened school year with fewer class days. Leila Areola, DepEd director for curriculum and instruction, explained during a congressional hearing on basic education that the earlier school ending in March 2025 could result in as few as 163 school days.  To address the potential shortfall and ensure students meet the 180-day minimum requirement, DepEd is considering selecting Saturdays for additional classes. Areola, however, clarified it will not be every Saturday of the upcoming school year. “There will just be certain Saturdays that we need to conduct, for example, distance learning, so that they will be able to cover the competencies that mi...
